THIAGO TOES
Thiago Toes' production is a hybrid between different manifestations, including painting, sculpture and site specific, guiding the viewer to a sensorial space that makes us reflect on our presence and passage through the universe. According to journalist Mariana Melleu, “his work takes us to the most necessary sensations, at the same time that it proposes to observe and rethink our place in space.” In his most recent productions, he investigates, from his poetic eyes, the stars and constellations, alternative dimensions, physical and optical phenomena, using elements foreign to this terrain – balaclavas, masks and caps – elements linked to his history with the graffiti. As he builds his work, origins and births interest him greatly, making him grow as an artist in this time and space. This time shows us the multiplicity of senses, colors and spectrums of this world created by Toes.

“Toes has, in recent years, developed his own vocabulary in paintings, sculptures and installations, always linked to the cosmic, astronomical (and also astrological) sphere, independently of the language of graffiti, where he began. His recent production investigates with poetic, rather than scientific, eyes the stars and constellations, alternative dimensions, physical and optical phenomena, using elements foreign to this field – balaclavas, masks, caps, objects linked to his history with street art. Births and origins seem to interest Toes a lot, as if he were constructing his own birth or origins as an artist.”

“Thiago Toes opposes this perspective and, over the last few years, has been investigating the fictional dimension of the artistic object. In his paintings, mythological signs - coming from different cosmogonies and seeking to explain the origin of the planet and human beings - coexist with urban and mystical elements. By juxtaposing these distinct images, he suspends what we previously called in this text a priori meaning and creates a space between the historical and mystical dimensions and the power of meaning contained in the images.
In a formal exploration, combined with erasing and highlighting procedures, we are invited to a game: in some moments, there is something veiled in the paintings and elements that we have before us, in others, the surface of the canvas keeps only the memory of the artistic gesture and chromatic sensation fills us. The linearity of time and visual experience are of no interest to Toes.“

"In the non-linear fiction that Toes creates for himself through paintings, time and space are understood in an extended way and, as in a free field for experimentation, it is he, the author himself, who starts to appear in the narrative, as if he were a kind of eyewitness to History. Not only that, the artist uses his paintings as a kind of repository of memories, sometimes presenting elements that have inhabited his imagination for years, or bringing scenes from childhood that now return, recontextualized."
