LUIZ 83

Luiz 83 (São Paulo, Brazil, 1983) is a self-taught artist. His practice is rooted in the experience he gained on the streets of São Paulo as a pichador (Brazilian pixação writer), an activity that provided the foundation for the visual vocabulary he has continued to refine through inventive research in more conventional media such as drawing, painting, and sculpture.

His professional experience as an art exhibition installer has also allowed him to remain in close contact with both classical and contemporary artworks, fostering a form of knowledge acquired through direct and sustained engagement. Luiz 83 has participated in numerous solo and group exhibitions, including the 37th Panorama of Brazilian Art at the Museum of Modern Art of São Paulo (MAM-SP); Hands: 35 Years of Afro-Brazilian Hands at MAM-SP; Street Art Trends at the Brazilian Museum of Sculpture and Ecology (MuBE); Pretatitude: Insurgencies, Emergencies and Affirmations in Contemporary Afro-Brazilian Art at SESC Ribeirão Preto, São Carlos, Vila Mariana, and Santos; and Dos Brasis: Black Art and Thought at SESC Belenzinho and SESC Quitandinha.

"From the dialogue between the traditional spaces of art and the street, from a particular reading of the history of art in BRAZIL, and especially of our history of sculpture, the work of LUIZ83 emerges. Moving between the concrete legacy and the culture before working with poetic works through street art, this artist reinvents the material from concrete, revealing previously hidden constructive qualities. The cardboard takes shape and is projected into space, becoming new things. The graffiti letters, previously two-dimensional and contextually coded, make a new sign, a whole full of poetry. design, form, idea and merge to reconstruct the space."

"If the letters are the raw material manipulated by the artist since the beginning of his career as a pixador, then it is necessary to explore the relationship between image - lyrics, word sound and human experience. The construction of the letters comes from pixação: a stylization of the characters capable of giving freedom to the artist. “Studying the shapes (of the letters) of others - a typical procedure among pixadores - made me realize that I could also build a letter with my own pattern, but inspired by others I admire. It's all a matter of style. I write very basic letters.", the artist reveals. The construction of words comes from the world, and classifies, separates and taxonomizes everything that exists in matter between sounds and concepts. Forged between experience and sound, the words seem to both separate and bring the world together."
