“By scrambling perspective and creating vectors of entry, Júlio’s painting produces a more fractal image, challenging the viewer to perceive a depth that projects outward from the canvas, like a vortex that engenders and reveals space. In Entrespaços, Júlio Vieira presents a visual repertoire that, taken as a whole, stems from a desire to construct markedly ‘other’ spaces, born of mixture and hybridity. These spaces invite the gaze to move through their folds, problematizing the real spaces of everyday life and the marks of power found within them, thus articulating a standpoint on the artist’s own surroundings, even amid disorientation.”

“Beyond his references to art history, Júlio also turns his attention to the construction of urban imagery, carefully observing the landscapes suggested by the city or the nature hidden within it. This approach is clearly reflected in his practice, as the painting series he develops draw from elements of these realms and unfold into a highly cohesive formal proposition, connecting affective memories with popular culture, everyday objects with plant species, graphic signs with opposing and complementary colors, poetry with image. Throughout his work, the artist seems intent on revealing possible narratives through the recombination of elements he transforms.”
